Mike Flores
Mike Flores, a native of the tough steel city of Youngstown, Ohio where football is a way of life, and where he began to carve out his legacy as a defensive end/tight end for the East High Golden Bears. As a junior in high school, Mike Flores began to excel athletically earning All City Honors and breaking school records. As a senior, he proved to be just as productive by shattering his own records. He was named the Most Valuable Defensive Player in the City of Youngstown. Mike also held the distinguished Mike Deniro Award, an award given to the best lineman in the city. Until this time, the award had never been presented to an East High student athlete.Due do his outstanding athletic achievements, Mike Flores was offered multiple Division 1 offers and chose the University of Louisville, a school primarily known for its basketball pedigree and championships. It wasn’t too long before Mike’s ability became noticed by the defensive staff and he became a starter as a red shirt sophomore. Soon he was again breaking records and helped to bring national respect and recognition to the school. As a junior, he broke the schools record for sacks and tackles for lost and duplicated this feat his senior year by breaking his own records. He was awarded The Most Outstanding Defensive Lineman, as well as the Most Inspirational. Through his leadership, along with the great talents of his fellow teammates, the University of Louisville Cardinals shocked the entire nation with a blowout win against the Alabama Crimson Tide in the 1990 Tostitos Fiesta Bowl, where he still holds the single sack record to this day.Mike Flores continued to live out his childhood dreams by being selected by the Philadelphia Eagles in the 1991 NFL Draft. He had some productive years in the NFL winning numerous game balls and was even considered a premier defensive player on the free-agent market when he left the Eagles in1994. Mike Flores finished out his career with the Washington Redskins where he retired. During the end of those years Mike developed a passion for people, especially the youth. He has turned his focus to intentionally being a role model and sharing his Christian faith. Mike enjoys volunteering for the Fellowship of Christian Athletes, speaking at churches, coaching football, challenging young men, and spending time with his wife Stephanie and their 7 children and five grandkids.
